Ten Love Songs That Sound Like Stalkers

They say the line between love and obsession can be in some cases very thin. Such is the case in some of our most cherished love ballads. Some of the lyrics of the songs below can be quite creepy…imagine your own personal stalker scrawling them on a piece of paper and sliding them under your door.

10. Def Leppard, “Two Steps Behind”

“Walk away if you want to.
Its ok, if you need to.
Well, you can run, but you can never hide
From the shadow thats creepin up beside you.”

“Well, I’ll be two steps behind you
(wherever you go)
And I’ll be there to remind you
That it only takes a minute of your precious time
To turn around and I’ll be two steps behind.”

9. Foo Fighters, “Walking After You”

“If you’d accept surrender, I’ll give up some more
Weren’t you adored
I cannot be without you, matter of fact
I’m on your back, I’m on your back, I’m on your back

If you walk out on me, I’m walking after you
If you walk out on me, I’m walking after you”

8. The Association, “Cherish”

“Cherish is the word I use to describe
All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside
You don’t know how many times I’ve wished that I had told you
You don’t know how many times I’ve wished that I could hold you
You don’t know how many times I’ve wished that I could mold you
Into someone who could cherish me as much as I cherish you
Perish is the word that more than applies
To the hope in my heart each time I realize
That I am not gonna be the one to share your dreams
That I am not gonna be the one to share your schemes
That I am not gonna be the one to share what seems to be
The life that you could cherish as much as I do yours”

7. The Turtles, “Happy Together”

“Imagine me and you I do
I think about you day and night
It’s only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight
So happy together
If I should call you up invest a dime
And you say you belong to me
And ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be
So very fine
So happy together
I can see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life “

“So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We’re happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together “

6. Olivia Newton-John, “Hopelessly Devoted To You”

” Guess mine is not the first heart broken,
my eyes are not the first to cry I’m not the first to know,
there’s just no gettin’ over you
Hello, I’m just a fool who’s willing to sit around
and wait for you
But baby can’t you see, there’s nothin’ else
for me to do I’m hopelessly devoted to you
But now there’s nowhere to hide,
since you pushed my love aside I’m not in my head,
hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you,
hopelessly devoted to you”

5. Barry Manilow, “Can’t Smile Without You”

” You know I can’t smile without you
I can’t smile without you
I can’t laugh and I can’t sing
I’m finding it hard to do anything
You see I feel sad when you’re sad
I feel glad when you’re glad
If you only knew what I’m going through
I just can’t smile without you”

4. Bryan Adams, “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You”

” There’s no love – like your love
And no other – could give more love
There’s nowhere – unless you’re there
All the time – all the way

Oh – you can’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for
I can’t help it – there’s nothin’ I want more
I would fight for you – I’d lie for you
Walk the wire for you – ya I’d die for you

Ya know it’s true
Everything I do – I do it for you”

3. Partridge Family, “I Woke Up In Love This Morning”

“Hello, girl, yes it’s five o’clock I know but you just listen
there’s something that I’ve got to let you know
This is you, this pillow that I’m huggin’ and I’m kissin’
and one more thing before I let you go”

I woke up in love this morning
I woke up in love this morning
Went to sleep with you on my mind
I woke up in love this morning
I woke up in love this morning
Went to sleep with you on my mind”

2. Mister Mister, “Broken Wings”

Baby, it’s all I know
That you’re half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole
Yeah, yeah, yeah…
Yeah, yeah!

So take these broken wings
And learn to fly again, learn to live so free
When we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up and let us in
Take these broken wings
You’ve got to learn to fly, learn to live and love so free
When we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up for us and let us in

Yeah, yeah!
Ooooooh, yeah!”

1. The Police, “Every Breath You Take”*

“Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
Ill be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
Ill be watching you”

“Since you’ve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but its you I cant replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please…”

*To be fair, “Every Breath You Take” wasn’t meant to be a love song, but it’s mistakenly thought of as one in general pop-culture. A another bonus Police stalker song would be “I Can’t Stand Losing” –

” I’ve called you so many times today
And I guess it’s all true what your girlfriends say
That you don’t ever want to see me again
And your brother’s gonna kill me and he’s six feet ten
I guess you’d call it cowardice
But I’m not prepared to go on like this”

” I guess this is our last goodbye
And you don’t care so I won’t cry
But you’ll be sorry when I’m dead
And all this guilt will be on your head
I guess you’d call it suicide
But I’m too full to swallow my pride

I can’t stand losing you “

The Police = issues.

Ah, the 80’s, when stalking was cool. Another one:

    Chicago – Stay The Night

I don’t want you to misunderstand me
I just wanna say what’s on my mind
No need to hit me with an attitude
Because I haven’t got the time
I want you to know one thing’s for certain
    I surely love your company
And I won’t take no if that’s your answer
    At least that’s my philosophy

    Stay the night
There’s room enough here for two
    Stay the night
I’d like to spend it with you
    Stay the night
Why don’t we call it a day
No one can stop us, nothing is in the way

  2. I’m always glad when others pick up on the super creepy stalker vibe (intended, as far as I’m aware) for Happy Together. Always makes me laugh when I hear it over commercials with people spinning round holding hands or whatever – aren’t they *listening* to the near frantic desperation in his voice?

  3. Creepy and stalkerish was very much the IN thing in the 80s. Then the 90s came and Mace was the new IN thing…

  4. Bob the Goldfish

Two of the most stalker-tastic songs ever.

    Clay Aiken – Invisible
“If I was invisible, I would just watch you in your room…”

Daniel Beddingfield -If You’re Not the One
“If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am?”

  5. My favorite stalking song is by the Vogues. I’m not sure what it’s called, but it goes like this, “There is someone… walking behind you… turn around… look at me… there is someone… watching your footsteps…” and on and on about following some poor girl. We don’t have a “Judy’s Turn to Cry,” but I bet the sequel would’ve been very sad.

  6. Oh yeah, the Police stuff was definitely MEANT to be creepy.

My vote for creepiest stalker-“love” song is the Beatles’ “Run For Your Life.” I find it nothing less than miraculous that, in a few short years, Lennon went from that to “Woman Is The Nigger Of The World.” Yeah, you could say his consciousness was somewhat raised. 🙂

  7. Eleanor Rigby

What, no “Right Here Waiting for You” by Richard Marx, lol?

    Ocean’s apart
    Day after day
    And I slowly go insane
    I hear your voice
    On the line
But it doesn’t start the pain
If I see you next to never
    How can we say forever?

    Wherever you go
    Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
    Whatever it takes
    Oh, how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

Heard this on a commercial and my first though was, “Creepy stalker music video!”

  8. Yeah, the Police is definetly my top rated “Stalker” song, along with that one from the Vogues.

Also “Sugar We’re Goin’ Down” by Fall Out Boy had some pretty insinuating lyrics…

“Oh don’t mind me I’m watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction in your jeans. Isn’t it messed up, how I’m just dying to be him, I’m just a notch in your bedpost, but you’re just a line in a song.”

    But they’re terrible as is.

Stalker songs! *thumbs up* What a great era for music the 80’s was. No joke!
